Indian Head Cents

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1026
1863. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC Approved. An original example of the thick copper-nickel cent (72 grains weight, versus 48 grains for the later bronze cents). There is more than a nuance of pale champagne and brown toning on both sides. Struck from typical dies that imported a mostly sharp but occasionally rounded texture. Pop 227; 50 finer, 7 in 65+, 41 in 66, 2 in 66+. (PCGS # 2067) .
Estimated Value $800 - 850.

Lot 1027
1864-L Bronze. NGC graded MS-66 Red. Brilliant copper-red surfaces are one of the appealing features on this remarkably preserved Gem example. A bold strike encompasses not only the sharp L on the ribbon but all four diamonds nearby, and all but the first two feather tips. Just a couple of microscopic flyspecks are noted on the obverse. The With L cents are many times rarer than the No L variety, and most are well circulated. Indian cent enthusiasts will pay close attention to this lot. Pop 5; none finer at NGC. Tied for the finest graded Red example at either service.
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.

Lot 1028
1872. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. CAC Approved. The 1872 is considered the most difficult Indian cent date, aside from the 1877, to obtain in Gem Mint State condition. This is due to the poor quality of the copper alloy being used at the Mint at the time. This Gem Red and Brown example is far finer than most survivors, thus the high grade by PCGS and the coveted CAC sticker. Slightly mottled red-orange and straw-tan colors equally overlay each side. There are no mentionable distractions or carbon spots, however, the strike is (typically) a bit soft in some local areas of the design. Pop 73; 7 finer, 1 in 65+, 6 in 66 (PCGS # 2104) .
Estimated Value $2,500 - 2,600.

Lot 1029
1874. PCGS graded MS-66 Red PQ. CAC Approved. As is the case with several other dates from the 1870s, the 1874 has a relatively low mintage and is considered very scarce with full Red surfaces. PCGS currently has certified 117 examples as Red, with most of those graded MS-64 or MS-65. The present lot is just one of eight 1874 cents certified as MS66 Red by PCGS, none are finer at either service. It is precisely struck and highly lustrous with rich copper-red surfaces. There are no mentionable abrasions. Carbon is minimal with two minor flecks noted on the eighth feather tip and northeast of the 4 in the date, and faint clash marks are present near the profile and the C in CENT. An unimprovable representative of a conditionally challenging date. Pop 8; none finer at both services. (PCGS # 2120) .
Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000.

1877. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red. An impressive alternative to a high-grade business strike 1877, this Gem proof Indian cent is sure to be of high interest to date collectors. It is a fully impressed example that also possesses beautiful color in rich copper-red and autumn-orange shades. There are no blemishes of note, and the overall appearance is of an even finer grade rating. Pop 19; 12 finer, 10 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 2320) .

Lot 1042
1909 Indian. PCGS graded MS-66 Red. Vibrant red color evenly overlays each side of this remarkable Gem example. The surfaces are truly outstanding as there are no bagmarks or spots of any consequence. The strike is better than average with only the slightest softness on a few of the feathers, but the wreath and shield are sharp. In terms of quality, this piece is one of the finest we have seen in some time. Pop 161; 18 finer, 12 in 66+, 6 in 67. (PCGS # 2237) .
